Creating a Culture of Team Member Engagement

How do we create a culture of employee engagement and why is it important to begin with?

As many of you well know, this process of identifying and measuring team members' engagement can be daunting and a somewhat arduous task depending on an organization's available resources specifically connected to people development and talent.

The rewards however, will speak for themselves. We won't spend time here outlining every benefit so we recommend an article by Susan Sorenson at Gallup on "How Employee Engagement Drives Growth." Click here to view the article.

In summary of Susan's writings, and based on what we've experienced or some would even reasonably assume, there is a significant correlation between levels of employee engagement and customer satisfaction ratings, profitability, productivity, safety incidents and lower turnover (just to name a few!).

There are many tools and applications available for organizations to measure feedback including the 1-1 Coaching and Professional Development Process which we discussed extensively in the first half of the year.

Simply, the root of identifying engagement comes down to giving and receiving feedback with consistency, clarity, intention and quantifiable data.

In this Tool of the Month, a tool and resource we recommend is the Q12 Employee Engagement Survey by Gallup. You can click here to visit the Gallup website and learn more or purchase a copy of First, Break All the Rules to view the research, data and questions.

When considering the process of administering the survey, we have found our Clients benefited greatly from utilizing a third party to provide support in administering, processing and communicating the results - whether they use Gallup, our Team at LSCA or pursue another avenue.

Administering an annual survey year over year and measuring the results empowers leaders and managers to make more effective business, strategic and succession planning decisions connected to people development, annual departmental budgets and projections, customer service needs, technology applications and the varying decision making groups, stakeholders and functionalities within an organization.

Colin Powell said, “Leadership is solving problems. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership.”

Team Member Engagement Surveys are a way to build on what you already know, discover the unknown, think about planning and provide an opportunity for people to open up, build trust and communicate.
