Consider for a moment the answers you would share if someone asked what training opportunities your organization offers. Have the learning opportunities you listed been developed and taught internally or created and shared through an external partner? Organizations certainly specialize in their own subject matter while also relying on external associates to provide insight and share knowledge and experience in other areas.

As we discuss the 4th Stage in the Team Member Experience Path, Training, we aim to shed light on internal training opportunities and benefits received at the individual, team and organization level which may be overlooked or under addressed during a Team Member’s first year in a role.

During those first twelve months where a Team Member is immersed in their new role it is critical to ensure all the bases are covered and they are indoctrinated in every aspect. As you get started in creating a training plan or surface development opportunities for an existing team member, a great place to identify the core components to address rest in the areas of responsibilities and expectations in an (i)deal Team Member Profile – (i)TMP.

While there are many platforms and systems available to organizations, we’ve found a solid training plan can simply be developed through two documents – the Team Member Profile as mentioned above and a Project Plan. The sample included in this month’s edition is an example of ensuring a new Team Member is comprehensively trained on all aspects of their role in connection with their (i)TMP as it will bring to light training opportunities in those first twelve months and beyond.

When considering all of the training opportunities within a role, team or organization, a sense of overwhelm may be close behind. The great news is this responsibility to share knowledge does not need to rest on the shoulders of one person or Team. In Radical Candor, Kim Scott encourages Leaders to recognize the Rock Stars on their Teams as “gurus” and empower them with the responsibility of training others in their area of expertise. Now the engagement and development opportunity has multiplied! Your new Team Member will reap the benefits of connecting with colleagues, expanding their knowledge and deepening their awareness of the role and organization.

An additional benefit in the training stage is the ability to refresh and or develop processes and procedures. We urge you to use this phase as an opportunity to surface what processes and procedures could be reset or created and consider integrating the responsibility of drafting and or creating those processes into the 12-month development plan of your team member. Supporting your Team Member as they identify and draft processes also creates an environment to practice sharing information, giving and receiving feedback and collaboration during the first year.

Lastly, while your Team Members and organization will certainly benefit from training and learning opportunities whether they are new to the organization or new to a role, there is one additional group who will reap tremendous benefits from the time, care and attention placed in building your Team - the Clients and constituents you serve each day. Training and development can enable individuals and teams to perform with the highest and best use of the skill set. The templates and tools developed within the stage and phase of training can also be shared with your clients and customers to bring and add value to their Teams.

We wish you the very best as you continue to lead, manage and serve others!
